What is a good book with information about the architecture of houses? I am trying to find a good book that details the different styles of housing architecture and shows examples. Are circular homes safer then the average home? I'm not really into architecture but the more I think about circular homes, the more I like the idea. I just assume that it would be safer since it's more aerodynamic, so wind damage wouldn't be that big of a problem. It would also be safer if your building underground because I'd think the pressure would just keep it together instead of imploding even during an earthquake. Is there really something to the Cottage shape? Any other benefits?

Architecture question: Seems to me that too many new McMansion type homes just don't have the same warmth and character of houses built a generation or two ago. Can you put your finger on it? Revit Architecture 2009-How can I calculate the square footage of a flooplan? I am new to the Revit Architecture 2009 software and I can not figure out how to calculate the square footage of floorplans without manually multiplying the square footage of each area and adding them together. We own an ornamental iron business. Who is responsible for proper architecture application? Owner of home says he wants the fence built a certain way. We see a problem with it. What classes should I take If I want a career in Architecture? I have another question on taking CAD classes. Im starting college this fall semester. My plan is to eventually become an Architect, mainly structural, mostly family homes. Ive been working for my fathers construction company since I graduated HS and I noticed that he pays a lot of money to this guy that draws up floor plans, and general building plans for simple home additions, gazebos etc. using AutoCAD and hands over his plans and work over to the city to be approved by the city's engineer, then we get the OK to start constructing. Well, I want to do what that guy does!!!! Now the thing is that in my schools' architecture program they have me start off with a "Free Hand Drawing"class... and Intro to CAD/CAD systems doesnt start until my third semester..... ----What if?--- I take my general ed classes along with my Freehand drawing class. AND!! take the Intro to CAD class that way I have an understanding of using AutoCAD, which allows me to draw up simple floor and room addition plans for my dads company, which, in return, allows me to make some money while I study to become an Architect while getting my feet wet in what I'm trying to eventually dedicate my life to doing. What what you do in my scenario? Any advice given to me is much appreciated, thank you very much... this an important time in my life, and I just want to start off on te right note.Thanks!

Restoring Buildings in a deserving town? I am looking for help to restore buildings in a town called Monessen, Pennsylvania. The town is filled with old buildings and homes with amazing architecture. Changin my major from Business Administration to Landscape Architecture? Ok I am currently at a four year private school and I am a junior. I am a business administration major but I have ALWAYS wanted to be a landscape architect and I am transferring schools so I can be closer to home. However, I am going stick with business administration and I plan on getting my bachelors in it in spring 2009. Here is my situation, I have heard that I could go to graduate school for "Master of Landscape Architecure" and get my masters in that, therefore I get a that nice combo. I have been advised that it is sort of late to try to get my bachelors now in Landscape architecture because I would spend another entire academic year just doing the pre-reqs to get into the program which is going to hold me back longer. What do you guys think? What should I do? Is it a good idea to just get my bachelors in business then master in landscape architecture? please give me any ideas/advice I would really appreciate it. Do I need a degree in Architecture to draw/design houses?? I want to know if i need a degree in architecture to design residential homes and be able to sell the plans online or to contractors. If not, would a business degree help in any way? I have already drawn several home plans in High School, and one that I drew my parents decided to build and all i did was give my plan to the contractor and he went from there. It was just floorplans,section cuts, and door & Window catalog. all of the wiring and HVAC diagrams were done by independent people I guess. Not sure If its possible to make any kind of business out of it, even as a 2nd job

architecture design major for college good idea and a bit confused bout the different designs in architecture? i'm going to syracuse university in sept this year. and was wondering if i should go for architecture, because i always like to design houses, both inside and out. including the garden even. so i was wondering if architectural design is something i should get into, i learned a bit about how to make blue prints and model homes in high school. but not much. but from what i know of architectural design, i like it. and my parents also agree. but there are many different categories of architecture design like interior design and exterior design and what not, i'm a bit confused. so if anyone can help me, i'll really appreciated it. thanks alot

Architecture in the UK? Hi all... I live in the U.S., but watch quite a bit of home improvement shows on BBC America. I have a few of questions about the architecture that I see... Why do your internal doors open to the wall? Here, the doors open into the room, so the door is flush with the wall when you open it 90 degrees. It seems much more convenient than having to open the door to 120 degrees, or so, in order to just walk into the room. Is there a history behind it, or a logical explanation? Why does every room have a fireplace? It seems most of the homes have radiators, as well, so I don't think it's for heating. Also, it seems that these fireplaces take up a bunch of space within the room, and are almost always centered on the wall with nothing done to the space on either side, which means that there is a bit of unusable space in each room. Why does no one have built-in closets? It seems everyone has an armoire, but with all of the above mentioned unused space, why is it so uncommon to see built-in clothing storage? I have seen all of these trends appear in old homes, as well as new...I get that spacial arrangements were different a few hundred years ago, but that doesn't explain the newer buildings. Would love to get some insight into these (completely trivial) things. Thanks all! Okay, maybe I need to clarify what I meant about the door opening... Here in the U.S., the door opens into the room, as opposed to into the hallway. However, when it is opened to 90 degrees, it is flush against the wall that is perpendicular to the wall it is mounted in. I have seen that in the UK, when the door opens, you immediately face the wall that is perpendicular to the wall that the door is mounted on, and are then essentially forced to open the door farther than 90 degrees in order to enter the room. I am intrigued to hear that some have doors that open into the room, instead of into the wall, as I have been studying this for some time, and have only seen them open the one way. Architecture school? I graduated in '06 with a BA in Spanish. I really want to get involved with restoring and redeveloping old homes and properties. What should I study in grad school? Do I have to go to architecture school? I don't want to spend a long time or a lot of money in the process.

Undecided if I should go for Architecture or Dietitian....? I am going to start out going for my dietitian degree because I love learning about nutrition and I really would enjoy educating people on eating healthier, but I also love drawing and designing homes. Now, I love the designing and drawing part, but i'm not exactly crazy about the math part to architecture. I know it is really whatever I would want to do, but any suggestions on if I should pursue the Architect degree if I am not so hot in math? I guess what I am asking is Architecture really all about math? This may be a crazy question, but I am so lost and undecided on what career path to take and I don't want to regret it later down the road. Thx

Architecture , Interior design or both ?? i know that ARCHITECTURE is creating the exterior structure of a building (the outside), and the INTERIOR DESIGN is the decoration of a building (the inside).. but is there some branch that combines between the two of them at the same time..Studying the exterior and the interior design of homes..?? iF it exists what's its name..?? In which College ..??

Architecture..Business...or Law? My question is which would i be most successful in?... My life goal is to be wealthy, live downtown with my family. Have my wife stay at home ( or not need to work), and my kids go to a private academy for schooling. I myself grew up with poor teachers and a horrible environment to learn in. Now a junior i go to a better school, yet my GPA struggles at a 3.2 on a 4 scale. I am a great public speaker, successful seller on eBay, and a great drafter in all of my Architecture classes, as well as a great golfer and 13th in the state in swimming. Which would be the best career choice for me to major in. Also which would have the highest starting pay, and long term pay. Currently i am interested ( in order) Architecture, Law, and Business. Any suggestions would be great. Look at my other questions on the related subjects.
